Bone Grafts in Brantford

Everything you need to know about your bone graft appointment at Arora Dental

What is a bone graft?

  • Bone grafting is a surgical procedure used to rebuild or augment bone in the jaw. This is often necessary as a preparatory step for dental implants or to stabilize teeth affected by bone loss.

  • Bone grafting is indicated for patients who have experienced bone loss due to periodontal disease, trauma, or infection. It is also necessary when insufficient bone volume is present to support dental implants or to stabilize teeth that have lost their natural bone support.

Pre-operative instructions

Before the procedure, discuss your medical history and medications with the dentist, particularly if you are taking blood thinners. Bone grafting and extractions are more invasive procedures that require local anesthetic so it is recommended to eat before your visit to prevent adverse reactions such as light-headedness.

During your appointment

Most often, bone grafting occurs after a tooth extraction procedure, but it may also occur on a site where an extraction was previously performed. The graft material is placed in the deficient area and may be secured with a membrane to promote integration. The incision is then sutured closed.

Post-operative instructions

Following a bone graft, avoid chewing on the graft site and follow a soft-food diet for the first few days. Use any prescribed antimicrobial rinses to keep the area clean and prevent infection. Smoking and strenuous activities should be avoided during the healing period.

After your visit

Mild swelling, discomfort, and bruising are normal after a bone graft and can be managed with prescribed medications. The graft will integrate with your natural bone over several months, providing a strong foundation for further dental work.

Frequently Asked Questions

You might need a bone graft if you've lost bone due to a missing tooth, gum disease, or after a tooth extraction. It's often the first step if you're planning on getting a dental implant and your jaw needs a little support to hold it properly.

During the procedure, you won't feel pain because we use local anesthesia to numb the area completely. You may feel some pressure, but no pain. After the procedure, you may experience mild swelling, discomfort, or bruising, which is normal and can be managed with prescribed medications. Most patients find the recovery manageable with proper care and follow-up instructions.

Bone graft coverage varies by insurance plan. Many plans provide partial coverage (typically 50-80%) when the bone graft is medically necessary, such as for dental implant preparation or to treat bone loss from periodontal disease. Coverage may be more limited if it's considered cosmetic. We're in-network with most major insurance providers and can help you understand your specific coverage and payment options before treatment.
